I Can’t Make Judgement Disappear
No matter how hard I try, I can’t make judgment disappear. I also can’t make fear and doubt disappear either.
I find that it’s impossible not to judge myself. I don’t think I will ever be able to silence my inner critic.
How well did I paint yesterday? Not very well.
Am I painting better today? I don’t think so.
I don’t think I am a better artist now than I was a year ago.
My paintings were so much better and more interesting before I began adding color.
I mean, it could go on and on. Right? And it does!
I will say, in my defense, I am reasonably kind to myself. I don’t usually beat myself up for making mistakes or failing. Which is good. I helps knowing that making mistakes and ruining a painting are all part of the process of making art, and the evolution of an artist.
But, I do criticize myself.
I will also say in my defense that my conviction, perseverance, and confidence in my ability to create, are very strong. This helps too.
So… I have accepted that I am going to judge and criticize myself. And more importantly, I have decided to be an artist who makes his work and puts it out there, in spite of my own judgment and criticism.
Judgment is not a deal breaker. Neither is fear and doubt.
I have decided to paint in spite of being judgmental.
I have decided to paint in spite of being fearful.
I have decided to paint in spite of doubting myself.
Since judgment, fear and doubt are not planning on disappearing anytime soon, I might as well CREATE ANYWAY.
Creating art is the single most important thing an artist can do.
Best,
David
