"Painting is no problem. The problem is what to do when you're not painting."

~Jackson Pollock

I am talking about fascination. Being fascinated by your idea, or subject matter, or a particular style, technique or method.

Lots of artists I know talk about procrastination, distractions, or the rigors of daily life as being the types of things that either get in the way or prevent them from creating.

My observation is that, the truth is, they have not found something to be fascinated enough about to not allow those things to get in the way of making their art.

In my experience, fascination is essential to creativity. Fascination is vital. Fascination matters.

I am fascinated with process. The act of creating. The journey. I love to make stuff. Create something out of nothing. It's my favorite thing in life to do and nothing will keep me from it. Nothing! Don't get me wrong, I get distracted, complacent and frustrated from time to time, however, my fascination with process is so strong and I have built up such momentum for creating that I am able to get back on track quickly.

The key is fascination.

And the trick is to begin. Start. Become fascinated with your idea, subject, technique or process. Create regularly. Gain and build momentum. And allow nothing or no one to get in your way.

Live your creative life on the edge of your seat.

Best,

David
