SUNDAY MUSINGS

The big show opens next Friday, January 3, 2014 at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. After well over a year of art making, creativity, blood, sweat and tears, highs and lows, successes, frustrations and several AHA moments, it is finally here. It has been quite a ride. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

As you know, I will be showing with local SLO sculptor, Mike Hannon. I cannot wait to see how our work looks together as it plays off each other in the space. I am excited for those of you who will see the show over the course of its month long run (show ends February 9) to see Mike's incredible sculptures as well.

Thanks to everyone who has been cheering me on on from Day 1. I really appreciate all of your support and encouragement. It has meant so much to me over this past year.

I know that many of you are planning to attend the opening. I cannot begin to tell you what this means to me. I am humbled and flattered. I thank you all in advance and I really look forward to seeing you there. You are in for a treat. I promise.

Those of you who are unable to attend the opening, I hope you get a chance to see the show in the next month sometime. I am very proud of this new work and I feel that it is some of the strongest work I have done to date.

GUESS AND CORRECT

Are you having trouble mixing that exact perfect color before you actually start painting? Are you waiting to make those first pencil marks, as you stare at your subject hoping to see it more clearly? Were you all fired up to start painting, until you got into your studio or work space and stood in front of your canvas (blank or in progress) unsure of how to begin or what to do next?

You have stalled out. You have lost momentum. Your confidence has taken a hit. You are waiting. Waiting for what? Some magic to happen? There are no "magic moments" in creating. There are only "roll up your shirt sleeves and get to work moments". There are AHA moments, but those only happen while you are working.

Get to work !

Don't wait.

Perfectionism is a momentum killer.

Don't wait for that perfect color mixture. Don't wait for that perfect moment of inspiration. Don't wait for something magical to happen.

Guess and then correct.

Mix the best color that you can at the moment and then start painting with it. After a couple of strokes you will either like it or not. It will either be the perfect color or it won't. If it is not the right color, try it again. Correct it. After your first attempt, and based upon how it looks on the painting, you will know if it is too yellow or if it needs more blue in it.

Guess and correct.

Start sketching. Make your first attempt. Try your best to capture the initial essence of your subject. Then try it again. Make the necessary adjustments. Correct the drawing.Your first attempt does not have to be perfect.

The point is: Don't wait. Start. Now.
