SURVIVING YOUR MISTAKES

This past week got me thinking about the choices that artists have to make. Not so much about the actual choices themselves, but the fact that choosing is such a necessity. And that's where many of us get bogged down. The inability to choose can actually paralyze us and prevent us from creating.
I think it comes down to fear.
We are afraid to commit to a regular painting schedule for whatever reason. We have a hard time deciding on an idea or subject to pursue. We can't seem to settle on a style. Do I paint in acrylic or oil? Do I use red or blue? Big brush or small brush? Canvas, paper or wood? You get the idea.
I think we are afraid that we will make the wrong choice. Or, that once we choose, we are beholden to that choice forever!
Ultimately it is a fear of failure. However, we forget that failure is a necessity for growth.
As artists, we must make decisions in order to function. If you are afraid to choose, it may halt you dead in your tracks.
Have the courage to make decisions and embrace the fear that goes along with doing so. Make a choice and move forward. You can always change your mind. Create anyway, in spite of the doubts.
Trust that you will make the best decision that you can make at the time. And then get on with the business of painting.
