3 ESSENTIAL QUALITIES

Presenting a lecture about my jurying process for Brushstrokes 2017, an exhibit currently on view at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. The exhibit was open to artists from all over California. I chose 53 paintings for the exhibit, out of the 241 pieces that were entered.

“You may get tired of working on a drawing but that’s the time to keep going -
something always comes from it.”

Jim Dine, Artist

3 Essential Qualities

Dedication. Persistence. Perspiration.

These are three very important qualities every artist should posses if they want to be a creative and productive artist.

Dedication is the quality of being devoted or committed to your art making. You have to love what you do so much that (almost) nothing else matters. You have to love your subject matter, medium, process and the time that is required to make art.

Persistence is the quality of continuing steadily despite problems or obstacles. Life is not going to step aside and let you make art. Life is going to be there every step of the way tugging at you and vying for your attention. Your creativity has to be high on your list of what is important to you.

Perspiration alludes to hard work. It takes hard work to be creative. Creating great art is difficult and requires you to roll up your shirt sleeves and get your hands dirty. And maybe even perspire a bit.

Best,

David
